In the year or so since I became this group's "Big Giant Head", I have never felt the need (or the motivation) to curate one of these showcases. I was always justifiably content in the knowledge that the other moderators were at least as capable as I (if not more so) to identify worthy individuals and bring them to the attention of the broader membership. However, having come across this members gallery while cruising the site using dA's "Random Deviant" functionality, I was prompted (compelled, actually) to reserve the right to produce this month's feature my

Pinhole photographyPinhole photography is photography done without lenses. Basically you have a box with a tiny hole through which the light passes and an image is then formed inside the box, usually on photographic paper.
Pinhole cameras come in all shapes and sizes but the above principle is common to all.
The pinhole was well known in antiquity and Aristotle discussed it in his work Problems. In Renaissance and post-Renaissance times artists used the pinhole principle (without photographic paper, you'll have to wait a few centuries for that!) or camera obscura as an aid to drawing landscapes. A camera obscura could be as large as a building, in the 19th century and also in the 20th century several such buildings were erected for educational and entertainment purposes e.g. Royal Mile, Edinburgh, or Clifton Observatory, Bristol and many more, spread around Europe. A very impressive camera obscura was built in Trondheim, Norway, in 2006.

Roy DeCarava - Shooting HimselfRoy DeCarava was born in New York City in 1919. His family lived in many areas of New York City during DeCarava's youth, including Harlem. Engaging formal study in fine art painting from a young age, DeCarava began working as a professional illustrator and painter.
He took up photography as an aide to his artwork. Increasingly, he was drawn to photography full time by "the directness of the medium," and soon found himself communicating the themes and ideas of his paintings photographically. In 1955, DeCarava opened a New York City art gallery and exhibition space, pioneering an effort to win recognition for photography as a fine art; the gallery remained open for over two years.
In 1952, DeCarava was the first black photographer to receive a Guggenheim grant. In 1996, the Museum of Modern Art put on a retrospective of his work. He was awarded a National Medal of Arts in 2006, the highest award given to artists by the United States Government.

Happens with me all the time!
Whenever I go out into the streets, I never plan on what I'm going to shoot, nor do I have a particular theme in mind.
Mind you, planning ahead is highly benefical to a Street Photographer or any photographer for that matter - a practice that almost always yeilds excellent results when properly utilized.
For me, it's just the sheer excitment of stepping into a vast concrete jungle, unsure about what's around the next corner, or perceiving an event that is about to unfold before you, the sound of your heart beating as you walk/run towards the developing scene - all the while hoping that you get there in time to take... that one shot, that ultimate payoff; is all that matters.
Sometimes you could be standing there observing a street scene when you begin to notice things falling into place; a photo opportunity forming right before your very eyes.

What do we need to shoot a Street picture?
1. A camera
Whatever kind of a camera is good. Either it is a ridiculously expensive rangefinder or an unbelievably cheap point and shoot compact. Either it shoots digital or it shoots film. Either it weighs a ton or it weighs few grams. ANY camera is fine as long as you have it with you.
2. A public place
This can be out in the streets or at the beach or inside a hotel's lounge or in a diner place or inside a supermarket or a mall or a school or whatever PUBLIC place. This public place must be visible in our picture. And things must be happening in this public place.
3. People

So, today I bring you Javier Acenillas. He is a Spanish freelance photographer and a psychologist at the Complutense University of Madrid. He describes himself as a humanist, and develops humanitarian essays.
He has won a number of international prizes, including: The Arts Press Award, Kodak Young Photographer, European Social Fund Grant, Euro Press of Fujifilm, INJUVE, Foto Press Third Prize, Luis Valtueña of Médicos del Mundo, Journalism Doñana´s prize, Luis Ksado, Make History, UNICEF, World Photography of the Year, Fotoevidence, Finalist of the Leica Prize 2009 and Antropography 2010.

TSF: A "Non-People Street" FeatureStreet Photography:
Non-People Street can be a touchy subject for some 'purists'.
I remember back when I had just started working on #TheStreetFactor
and was toying with the idea to include a Non-People Street folder in the gallery.
I was chatting with a good friend of mine, who also happens to be a brilliant Street Photographer.
He found the whole concept absurd:
My purist friend: Non-Human Street?! That's absurd!
Me: How so?
My purist friend: You CANNOT photograph buildings and objects in candid situations for one.
A Street shot without people isn't really considered as Street Photography.
Me: What about HCB? He did a lot of Non-People Street too.
(I didn't know much about Bresson back then; I was only taking a blind shot in the dark...)
My purist friend: Well, yeah...
Me: Aha!.

It's all about taste, I really enjoy the grain and sharpness it produces and for me it's the best in terms of tones and contrast. it gives me that moody and contrasty look that I want, every time.

An image is not all about focus. We at fineart-photography look for people that put feeling into their photographs. Photographs that artistic more than just the aesthetic way. But of course, each to their own.
