portrait is not a snapshot, but a carefully considered and composed representation of a subject, often showing that person looking directly at the author (i.e. the painter or photographer). Traditionally, a portrait is conceived and executed so that the image gives the viewer some insight into the subject's mood and/or personality.
A
self-portrait is a portrait
of the author
by the author. Its aims are those of any other portraiture. In addition, the self-portrait can be an avenue though which an author undertakes an exploration of self, which can be multi-layered and inspired by the desire to go deep into one's psyche.
The self-portrait in art has been known from antiquity. In photography, there are many examples going back to the beginning of the art-form. Sometimes, the photographer will capture an image of self as reflected in a mirror. Sometimes, the photographer will use a shutter timer or remote-control to capture the self-image directly. Occasionally an assistant may be asked to release the shutter.
Self-portraits can be whatever the imagination of the photographer allows. Cindy Sherman modeled for herself and in doing so she presented to viewers different characters or personae, as she consciously avoided representing
herself.
Here on deviantArt the self-portrait is a very popular genre and there are many examples to be seen in deviants' galleries. Technical competence may be uneven but ideas and concepts explored through these self portraits are often compelling.
